Welcome

Hi and welcome to my website. My name is Rosie Chapel and, although born in the UK, I now call Western Australia home. I am an independent author of historical and romantic fiction. My favourite period is classical antiquity, specifically Ancient Rome and its Empire, so it seemed natural to set my first novel within the first century AD.

Although my books are fiction, I have tried to be as accurate as possible about the era and events I am writing about. My first book The Pomegranate Tree is set on Masada, King Herod’s great citadel in the Judaean Desert, near the Dead Sea. In AD66 a band of Zealots attacked the Roman garrison stationed there and I used this as my starting point. My heroine, Hannah, is a young woman, skilled in the art of healing, who finds herself trying to save the lives of three Roman soldiers wounded in the Zealot ambush.

The characters in the first book refused to let go and thus one became a trilogy, spanning the Roman Empire from Masada to Pompeii and finally the northern frontier of Roman Britain. Using the archeological record, ancient source material, by exploring the customs, traditions and social expectations of the day, then adding a little bit of magic, I have created a series of novels which I hope both delights and inspires.

The time spent researching my books was as exciting as the writing itself, whether I was delving into the ancient art of healing, or learning about ancient burial rituals. I would like to think that my enthusiasm for ancient history comes across as the story unfolds and the lives of my characters intertwine. I really hope you enjoy reading them, as much as I enjoyed writing them.

Although I am still, for the most part, lost in antiquity, recently I fell in love with a whole new historical period ~ the Regency era. This has manifested itself in two romances with a third about to be released. As with the ancient world, learning the dialogue, lifestyles and social mores of this particular period has been fascinating and I often find myself totally immersed in their world ~ which is great fun.

I look forward to hearing from you and will keep you informed as new books are released.
